This is Dean’s story on building a legacy of entrepreneurship through digital empowerment in Africa
Entrepreneurship runs deep in Dean's family, a path set down through the generations, informing a powerful blueprint for resourceful, community-focused business building. His grandfather, a true serial entrepreneur, ran a pig farm near Polokwane, operated a makeshift movie house, and even cunningly built a thriving butchery during the oppressive Group Areas Act. Dean's father mirrored this entrepreneurial spirit, founding Polokwane's first driving school, which rapidly became the largest in the province. Dean's entrepreneurial destiny was clear, though his path to embracing it took time.
After completing his Information Technology studies, Dean began his career as a software developer, strategically building his network as he gained experience. This proved to be a pivotal strategy as a key connection later presented him with the opportunity to help build AdaptIT, the country's first Black-owned software development house. He quickly made a name for himself, progressively honing his skills and igniting his passion and place in making technology more accessible.
'Deep down I couldn't quite shake that I had ignored my entrepreneurial calling. My dad used to tease me about breaking the chain from my two previous generations. There was no pressure but more of a reminder that at some point I needed to face my true entrepreneurial calling.'
At the time of his fathers passing, Dean decided to step back and reevaluate his professional path. A friend suggested he leverage his experience in the telecoms space. Many conversations later, a new venture emerged, Digichilli, the first ever uncapped ADSL B2C offering in South Africa. In a perfect example of product-market fit, the business rapidly built a loyal customer base, even attracting acquisition offers.
Declining these ultimately proved to be a critical misstep, as heavily funded emerging players soon took over the very market that was once theirs. It was back to square one for Dean. He was soon snapped up as GM of operations at Bwired, an empowered telecommunications service provider addressing the need for affordable internet and broadband services.

Desperate to be the custodian of his own professional journey, while charting his next steps, Dean was asked to help roll out Soweto's first Wi-Fi network, a significant opportunity to serve an underserved community. Unbeknown to him at the time, this was the final area of experience needed to prime him for a pivotal life changing opportunity that was soon to be realised. Hans, a fellow entrepreneur from the Netherlands, was introduced to him via a mutual contact. At the time, Hans was facing significant hurdles in introducing his travel calling app to the South African market. Dean’s unmatched expertise uniquely equipped him to deliver a profound resolution.
'Seeing the calling app I saw potential but I also knew it needed to be adapted from the first world product that it was currently. I introduced Hans to life in the township. The spaza shops and the foreign nationals who needed to connect with family in other African countries. There was a whole new world of opportunity.'
Combining Dean's deep understanding of telecoms and the African market with Hans's product expertise and fundraising ability, the duo was ideally equipped to tackle the significant challenge of revolutionizing international calling for the African diaspora. Dean was intensely focussed on how to localise the product, to serve the likes of the unbanked consumer leveraging their everyday channels. His vision was to activate Talk360 as a product that sits naturally in this unique space and way of life.
'We were launching what was for many, their first digital paid for product. It needed to be light on data, slick, easy to use and accessible. With so many foreign languages being spoken, and low digital literacy levels, most of the work to be done lay in the teaching and learning.'
Years of dedicated community engagement culminated in Talk360's significant product uptake today. With South Africa as its flagship, Talk360 has subsequently expanded into new markets throughout Africa. Dean refers to his fathers phrase: ‘little bit, little bit’ meaning that significant achievements are built through numerous small, often unperceived, contributions. Dean sees Talk360's future in providing customers consistent access to relevant, cutting-edge digital services. With trust driving future adoption, Talk360 is perfectly poised to empower communities with reliable solutions.
'Sometimes I get caught up in the building and I try to stop and really look at where I am in the moment. It is always so touching when I go to a township or community and I see that somehow we are the source for them being able to communicate back home. Realising how much we impact people's lives with what we have been able to achieve with Talk360 is something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.'
Dean’s journey has seen him playing an instrumental role in a lot of ‘firsts’, a chip off the old block, he is a pioneer, a true builder, making it his life's work to bring such vision into reality, often achieving what others simply deem impossible.
